2016 GHF DVD: The Quiet Birdmen Air Racing

Air Racing started in France in 1909 with Glenn Curtiss (1900) winning the Gordon Bennett Trophy over favored Louis Blériot.  Billy Mitchell (675) organized a transcontinental Air Race in 1919.  Cliff Henderson (4173) ran the National Air Races and developed the Bendix race and Thompson Trophy.  Items like the NACA cowling were designed for racing but also furthered military design.  Featured QBs include Jimmy Doolittle (1578), Roscoe Turner (1509), Cook Cleland (9824), Walter Beech (526), Charles “Speed” Holman (1709), A. “Tex” Johnston (7181).  (2016 TRT 20:25)
