 It took a combination of knowledge, skill, and bravado to hop in a new plane and find the limits of the machine.  QB Test pilots included Charles Nungesser (563) and Francois Coli (565), who died pursuing the Orteig Prize that Charles Lindbergh (637) claimed two weeks later.  Rudolph “Shorty” Schroeder (1981) pursued high altitude records and aviation safety while Eddie Allen (2669) was a capable multiengine test pilot.  Jimmy Collins (1970) test flew Grumman aircraft and Alvin “Tex” Johnston (7181) barrel-rolled the prototype Boeing “Dash 80.”  Other QB Test Pilots included Bill Wheatley (1851), Wally Schirra (35323), and Jimmy Doolittle (1578).  (2017, TRT 21:00)
